Campus Telecommunications
Services, Fees, and Rates
Telephone service is provided on an annual fee basis to Rice departments and includes voicemail, call hold, call transfer, and four-digit dialing for campus calls.

Telecommunications Assistance
Contact OIT to set up or change your telephone service. Standard response time for repairs is 24 hours. Adding or changing a line typically requires 3–5 business days.

Using Campus Phones
Calling Campus Phones
To reach a campus number from off campus, dial: 713 + 348 + four-digit extension.
Directory Assistance
Use the Online Directory or dial 0 from a campus phone (or 713-348-0000 from off campus) and state the name of the person or department.
Dialing Instructions
- On Campus Calls: Dial the four-digit extension
- Local Off Campus: 9 + Area Code + Number
- Toll-Free Numbers: 9 + 1 + Toll-Free Number
- Long Distance: 9 + 1 + Area Code + Number
- International: 9 + 011 + Country Code + City Code + Number (available only for phones with international privileges)
Conference Calls
After connecting with the first caller, press the CONF button. This puts the first call on hold and gives a dial tone. Make the second call as usual (press 9 for an outside line). Once connected, press the CONNECT button. Repeat this process to add up to six participants including yourself.
Voicemail
Setting Up & Accessing Voicemail
For voicemail setup or password resets, contact the Telecommunications Office.
- Mailbox Number: Your four-digit extension
- Default Password: 147258 (must be changed at first login)

Accessing Voicemail from Your Campus Phone
- Press the voicemail key (cassette tape icon) and enter your PIN, or dial 3000.
Accessing Voicemail from Another Phone
- Dial 713-348-3000 and follow the prompts.
Videoconferencing
Zoom
Zoom is Rice’s official video and web conferencing platform for meetings, lectures, and collaboration across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android devices.
Zoom supports video, audio, and wireless screen sharing and can be used to connect faculty and students remotely.
